At Archadeck of Charlotte, we get asked all of the time if we really need to pull a building permit when constructing a deck, screen porch, sunroom, outdoor fireplace, etc…. The answer is absolutely!
Most contractors try to avoid pulling a building permit here in North Carolina. The cost of the permit is reasonable (usually under $200) but complying with the many building codes can be quite costly. Why should you the consumer care? These building codes change each year and they are meant to protect you from saftey hazards and poor building practices. In addition, when you go to sell your home and if the buyer hires an inspector prior to purchase, you will run into a large expense as well as potentially turning off the buyer! For your own protection, ask your contractor up front whether they intend to pull the permit and then make sure they follow through and call in for inspections of their work!
