Can I put a grill under a roof?

Most of our clients at Archadeck of Charlotte prefer to have a roof over them when they are using their grill. The idea of standing under the sun for an extended period is not exciting. Furthermore, being rained on is not an exciting prospect either!

For years we could design and build covered areas to place your grill. There is a building code violation that prevents us from doing that. The concept is that the practice presents a fire hazard.

There are 2 ways now we design “covered” spaces in order to be protected from the elements while you are grilling.

One is simply to design the outdoor kitchen or grilling station on the outside of the roof just enough to where you can stand under the roof while the grill station is not covered!

The second is a much more expensive but quite legal option. We can purchase and install a vent hood and place the outdoor kitchen directly under the roof. For more information on grilling and outdoor kitchens, go to archadeckofcharlott.com

Options for covering your deck or patio? There are plenty of shade options!

Is the sun rendering your deck or patio useless? At Archadeck of Charlotte, we often hear this and people want to know all of their options for shade?

When you live is sunny states, shade becomes a necessity for protecting your skin and just plain comfort. Whether you have a deck or a patio, the same options are viable.

Retractable awnings are a popular choice, particularly in Sun City Lakes where we install remote controlled Craftbilt Awnings with Sunbrella fabric in a wide variety of colors and even wind sensors!

Designing various roof lines that compliments a homes architecture is very popular in terms of a shade option. Whether its a gable, hip, or shed roof, they all provide the maximum amount of shade but the roofs are the most expensive cover option. In addition to the roof, of course screening in the posts supporting the roof can add additional shade as well.

Finally, pergola’s or arbors are used quite extensively to provide shade protection. The closer we put the timbers together, the more shade they provide. There are additional solutions with a pergola now like fabric covers and polycarbonate corrugated covers to place on top of the pergola. We have an extensive photo gallery of pergola photos as well as covered deck photos at http://www.charlotte.archadeck.com

How much sun comes through a pergola versus a porch roof?

The famous question….how much sun protection will a pergola provide? What are the advantages of a pergola versus a porch roof?

At Archadeck of Charlotte we get asked this question almost daily! The answer lies in how the pergola is constructed. For example, the closer you space your rafters and perlins, the more sun protection you will receive. This is not to say it will stop all of the sun, but then again, neither will a roof. If you think about it, the sun moves all day long and your roof and or pergola of course are stationery. At any given time, the sun may peak under the roof as well. What both the pergola and the roof provide are some protection. The primary difference comes when you have rain, then the roof is the better protection by a long shot.

One solution to provide rain protection on a pergola is to cover it with either a canvas or metal pan system. There are some very nice products on the market now to cover a pergola with and you can get many design ideas at http://www.charlotte.archadeck. com

In the end, pergola’s can provide quite a bit of protection depending on how they are designed and the additional features you may choose to add to them. Talk to a professional who can guide you through the various options and prices!

Porch Accessories…what else can I add to my porch?

As you have read over the past several years in my blog posts, our porches are becoming more and more the area we want to spend more time. There are more accessories for the porch now than ever!

Porch swings are one of the most common asked about accessories. They can be mounted and hung in a screen porch, on an open porch, or even on a pergola. They are primarily available in pressure-treated wood that will not rot but can be found in a low-maintenance alternative such as pvc. They can also be customized by skilled carpenters.

raperies for porches are another hot trend. The roof of the porch keeps much of the sun out but when the sun is going down, it sneaks under the roof and people want to be protected at twilight as well. There are a variety of shear fabrics with varying levels of opacity that are readily available.

Cooling misters are available and relatively affordable to install around the perimeter of the porch. On the flip side, heating systems can be installed or free-standing heating systems can be purchased so that you can use the porch year round. This is the real want by consumers today, year-round outdoor living.

Easy access on and off the porch are other concepts that people want help with whether it be adding additional entry points from their exterior back house walls or adding walking paths from their existing driveway back to the porch.

Outdoor TV’S…what do I need?

With evolution in Charlotte, NC and the surrounding market moving even at a faster pace from the inside of their home to outdoor living, there are more and more features that people want to enjoy outdoors. A fast growing one is outdoor TV’s. The leader in the category of outdoor televisions is Sunbrite , they practically own the category.

The question is, do I need an outdoor rated TV or not if I cover the TV with a roof? The answer is…it depends.

The advantages of the outdoor TV is the equipment is literally built to withstand the elements of hot or cold. In addition, the non-reflective screen keeps the glare off and allows you to see a perfect picture even on a bright and sunny day!

If you have a roof over your deck or patio and the TV is completely covered and out of the elements, a standard TV should be fine for years ( I know that personally). Having said that, with an outdoor space and depending on how much you watch, investing in a product like Sunbrite can be well worth the investment! As a Sunbrite dealer, we supply them at our cost when we design and build outdoor living spaces at Archadeck of Charlotte. To find photos of outdoor living designs, go to www.charlotte.archadeck.com
