Can I put a grill under a roof?

Most of our clients at Archadeck of Charlotte prefer to have a roof over them when they are using their grill. The idea of standing under the sun for an extended period is not exciting. Furthermore, being rained on is not an exciting prospect either!

For years we could design and build covered areas to place your grill. There is a building code violation that prevents us from doing that. The concept is that the practice presents a fire hazard.

There are 2 ways now we design “covered” spaces in order to be protected from the elements while you are grilling.

One is simply to design the outdoor kitchen or grilling station on the outside of the roof just enough to where you can stand under the roof while the grill station is not covered!

The second is a much more expensive but quite legal option. We can purchase and install a vent hood and place the outdoor kitchen directly under the roof. For more information on grilling and outdoor kitchens, go to archadeckofcharlott.com

Covered patio pricing, how much does a porch cost?

Are you researching the price of a covered patio? We are going to provide some updated pricing for porches to provide some guidelines.

While a simple square foot price can you get you part way there, there are many other considerations.

Is there an existing patio? Are there footings around the perimeter? Is the patio cover going to be attached to the house or free-standing? All of these questions affect the pricing of a covered patio. What is the roof line? A gable roof will cost slightly more than a shed roof and a hip roof or flat roof will add more than a gable. Is the roof going to be attached to the house wall or need to be tied into the existing roof line? When the roof needs to be tied into the existing shingles, it adds to the cost as well.

If you are figuring a roof over an existing patio of any substrate, you will need to add to this figure depending on the type of roofing, columns, footings, etc….

In today’s figures, we would say around $50 – 70 per square foot to cover a patio. If the roof will be less than 120 square feet, you will pay more per square foot due to the inefficiency of material and labor. You can see many covered patio designs at archadeckofcharlotte.com

Do I need to screen in my porch in Charlotte, NC?

For years, everyone felt the need to screen in their porch in the Carolina’s. More and more over the past 3 years, we have seen a shift to what we would call “open porches” or covered patios or covered decks.

These are basically the same structures with a roof and columns but one has a screen with a screen door and the other does not.

Why the trend to open porches? First and foremost, people like an unobstructed view. The fact is, most screen porches require more vertical posts than open porches to connect the screen to. When an open porch is designed, you can get away with fewer columns and they tend to be more substantial or wider columns. Often times when there is no screen, we use various decorative trims on the columns that don’t work as well when you attach the screen.

By installing larger ceiling fans, many times you can achieve the goal of the screen. The blowing fans tend to bother flying insects and they tend to stay on the perimeter. The advent of mosquito repellent companies, such as Mosquito Squad in Charlotte also plays a factor in enabling a homeowner to keep their covered porches open! What are my shade options for my Charlotte patio?

In Charlotte, our backyards are consistently under siege by the constant heat and bright shine from the sun.

What are the options for shade? This time we are going to discuss ideas ranging from the least expensive to most expensive.

There are options of umbrellas like above that range from hundreds of dollars to a couple of thousand dollars. The upside is the low cost and they can be attractive. The negatives are they are not permanent, require movement, and maintenance.

Awnings can be attached to the back of the house and depending on the quality and size, can range from $1,000 up to $6,000. They are relatively effective at blocking the sun. They are not the most attractive option and do not hold up in wind and need to be maintained.

Pergolas or arbors as they are sometimes called are another option for shade. They can range from $2,000 – $8,000 depending on materials and size. They are quite attractive and a cost effective way to shade your deck or patio. The negative is they do not block out rain and the shade is only partial.

Finally, a solid roof structure like the one constructed in the photo above by the pool. These can run from $10,000 and up depending on size and materials. The positives are the total block from sun and rain, they are beautiful when designed properly, and increase property value. The only negatives are the higher cost and potentially blocking light from coming into your home.

Which porch roof do I want and why?

One of the most important decisions people have to make when it comes to covering their deck or patio is selecting the appropriate roof line.

There are several options to choose from and sound reasons to pick each. The first thing we assess as a professional screen porch builder is what obstacles are in the way and what is the architecture of the home. This means are their windows where a roof may be designed, if it needs to tie in up on the existing roof, are there vents, pipes, chimney, sky lights?

These are all items that can affect the placement and design of a potential roof. If you are looking for the lowest cost solution, a shed style roof attached to the back wall is going to be the lowest cost option. Put a gable roof or “A” frame is the second least expensive option and is great for allowing more light back into your home since it vaults and allows light back into the house.

A hip style roof fits great on a home that already has a hip roof or in between 2 gables on the back of a house. It tends to be pricier due to the fact that you have more roof line. Working with an outdoor living expert is advisable to get an experienced eye to look at your roof options with you.
