Hardscape sitting walls, design and purpose

With the absurd growth of paver and stone patios, the public is taking notice of features that accompany them. Whether it be an outdoor fireplace, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, or sitting walls.

The sitting walls serve multiple purposes. They are custom designed to meet function and aesthetics.

At Archadeck of Charlotte, we typically design them to follow the soft curve or bay of a patio layout to add a “picture frame” or provide definition. They are commonly used as a space saver when we build a fire pit as shown above. We design them to be 18″ – 20″ tall, which matches the height of a typical chair you would sit in.

Other uses include the function of a barrier to water draining back onto the patio due to the grade of your land. In addition, they can be used as a combination of a retaining wall and a sitting wall. Go to archadeckofcharlotte.com to see a complete photo gallery of outdoor living space designs.

Hardscape designs

Hardscape designs can be defined by a combination of products being incorporated into a project. We have grown into a full hardscape design build firm at Archadeck of Charlotte.

The origins of hardscapes was really referring to any retaining wall work and patio work. Today we lump the term “hardscapes” with almost any hard surface like outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, and water features.

The market has made a major shift towards more and more hardscape designs in the Carolinas. The combination of substrates such as stacked stone, pavers, and block are a very common theme today.

The common question people ask is should I invest in a fireplace or a fire pit?

Here are the key differentiators:

  1. Price – a common fireplace is around $8,000 while a common fire pit is around $1,500
  2. Function – a fireplace is wonderful if you are sitting in front of it to project heat while a fire pit everyone can sit around it
  3. Aesthetics –  a fireplace can be a focal point of the backyard due to size and stature while a fire pit a complimentary accessory
  4. Return on Investment – the fireplace is probably a bigger “wow” factor

Patios on Lake Norman with fire pits

There are so many outdoor living opportunities on Lake Norman. We find patios to be the largest growing segment of areas to add to the backyard along the lake. With the patio people want the ambiance and warmth of a fire pit.

Archadeck of Charlotte has been designing and building fire features and patios around town for almost 30 years now! The patios range from the popular and affordable pavers to stamped concrete and flagstone. We are seeing a rising demand for Travertine patios as they resemble tiles.

The fire pits come in all shapes and sizes. We also design and build outdoor fireplaces along the lake but keeping the view of the lake pure is critical in the design phase! To see a whole photo gallery on Lake Norman decks and patios, go to archadeckofcharlotte.com

Fire pits continue to show growth each and every year here in the Carolinas. They are used for both practical and aesthetic purposes. A common question is “do people really use them?” The answer is yes, the really do!

In terms of options of materials, the starter often is the Home Depot style that is pre-fabricated out of metal and is typically bowl shaped and can sit on the ground, patio, or deck.

When you get by the idea of the small portable style, you can upgrade to a table style fire pit that is more decorative and looks like a piece of furniture that you can take the table top off of and it becomes a fire pit. These are also a retail item and can be pricey.

In terms of built-ins or custom fireplaces, there are 3 basic material selections that dominate the market. The first is paver block material that is meant to match paver patios. The second is brick that can match the brick on your home or foundation wall. Finally, there are various stones you can use to give it either a more rustic or finished look.

In terms of price points, your Home Depot style is often of sale for less than $300. The paver block fire pits run between $750 – $1,000. The stone fire pits will run between $1,250 – $1,500. All of the above prices are assuming around a 4′ diameter fire pit that will be about 20″ tall.
