As you have read over the past several years in my blog posts, our porches are becoming more and more the area we want to spend more time. There are more accessories for the porch now than ever!

Porch swings are one of the most common asked about accessories. They can be mounted and hung in a screen porch, on an open porch, or even on a pergola. They are primarily available in pressure-treated wood that will not rot but can be found in a low-maintenance alternative such as pvc. They can also be customized by skilled carpenters.

raperies for porches are another hot trend. The roof of the porch keeps much of the sun out but when the sun is going down, it sneaks under the roof and people want to be protected at twilight as well. There are a variety of shear fabrics with varying levels of opacity that are readily available.

Cooling misters are available and relatively affordable to install around the perimeter of the porch. On the flip side, heating systems can be installed or free-standing heating systems can be purchased so that you can use the porch year round. This is the real want by consumers today, year-round outdoor living.

Easy access on and off the porch are other concepts that people want help with whether it be adding additional entry points from their exterior back house walls or adding walking paths from their existing driveway back to the porch.

Rustic chic screen porches..today’s designs

There is a real demand for designing screen porches with a rustic chic flare. We see different trends come and go but this idea of rustic chic has been there for awhile and the demand is picking up steam. If you really think about all that goes into a screen porch, you realize how many elements effect the aesthetics and overall architectural appeal.

We start with the construction and trim. The materials you choose for your flooring, columns, and ceiling all influence the appeal. In Charlotte, NC we see some exposed rafters up in the ceiling. We see dark, warm stains being used on the columns and floor.

Then think about trim detail. How do finish off the screen and the attaching mechanisms? How about the bottom and the top of the screen porch? For a great photo gallery of screen porch designs, go to http://www.charlotte.archadeck.com

How do I choose the correct paint or stain color for my screen porch or covered patio?

How would I go about choosing the appropriate paint and/or stain color for my screen porch? We have 25 years experience at Archadeck of Charlotte designing and building screen porches and covered patios.

The first thing we look at is the existing trim color of the home. Is this a color you are going to stay with? If so, it makes sense to paint the porch columns the same color and the house trim to make it appear as if the porch came with the house and was not an after thought!

Secondly, what look are you going for in your outdoor living space? Do you prefer a more rustic porch? Are you looking to have a soothing or uplifting ceiling? Dark stains are quite in vogue today and give a deep and rich feeling to the room.

Finally, think about maintenance considerations. Generally speaking, stain is going to be lower maintenance than paint and does not show dirt as readily! To get great color ideas for your screen porch, go to http://www.charlotte.archadeck.com

How can I determine the column size for my screen porch?

One of the important but mainly overlooked details when designing and building a screen porch or covered patio is the column size. So, how can you determine the appropriate size?

A good rule of thumb should take into consideration not only the size of the roof structure but also the height. the higher the porch, the more substantial the columns should be. Material or substrate also plays a role in the size of the porch column. For example, if you are utilizing a round fiberglass column, they are accompanied by a base cap that will make the column appear even wider. When you are using wood, perhaps there is an intent to wrap it with trim?

Most deck builders and porch builders will use 4×4 columns as a standard and upgrade to 6×6’s upon request. Archadeck of Charlotte will use 8×8’s or even 12×12’s for large open porches or porches that are 12′ off the ground or more.
