Why would I build an outdoor fireplace versus a fire pit?

Should you add a fire pit or fireplace as a feature on an outdoor living space? One thing is for certain, fire features are hot (no pun intended)!

So…why would you build an outdoor fireplace versus building a fire pit? Here are some important considerations:

1. Function

Do you want this to be part of a room enclosure like a screen porch or sun room? If so, it will by default have to be a fireplace for venting purposes. If you want to have a large group most of the time, a fire pit actually allows for a large group to sit on all sides and allows for more people to enjoy the warmth of the fire than a fireplace.

2. Aestheitcs

An outdoor fireplace is a focal feature of an outdoor space. By it’ sheer size and design, when build right and placed appropriately, the outdoor fireplace is a most attractive addition. On the other hand, if you have incredible views of water or woods, you may want something much lower profile like the fire pit. Both fire features can be additive to the overall landscape design but placement of the feature is critical.

3. Price

A stone outdoor fireplace can be as low as $8,000 and go up to $15,000 depending on size and additional features. The stone outdoor fire pit is more like $1,000 and go upwards depending on size and features.

There is a significant price difference as you can see. If budget will not allow for the fireplace, a fire pit will still serve as a great place to entertain friends and family. The one thing you will forgo is the focal point of the space. To see a complete photo gallery of outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, go to http://www.charlotte.archadeck.com

How many months a year can I use my screen porch in Charlotte?

We get asked often how many months out of the year can you use your screen porch in the Charlotte, NC area?

There are a few factors to consider when answering the question.

Is your backyard situated where you have no protection from wind? Do you get sun light on your porch? Have you installed a ceiling fan to circulate the air flow?

A great product that we distribute is Eze-Breeze windows that are retractable plastic windows that can convert your screen porch into a sunroom and right back again.

The primary difficulties of staying on your porch year around are the extremely cold days and hot days. To mitigate the heat, you can of course add ceiling fans or perhaps a mister system like are used at restaurants on their patios. To mitigate the cold, we often build outdoor fireplaces that are integrated into the screen porch. You can also purchase space heaters that are effective.

If you choose not to purchase these accessories, you can still use a screen porch in Charlotte about 10 months a year. By adding these, you can virtually live year around outdoors! To see great ideas for a screen porch, go to www.charlotte.archadeck.com

What are my options for stone patio’s?

There are many options for patio’s and we get asked all of the time what they are. Archadeck of Charlotte designs and builds outdoor living spaces and patios are fasted growing category for outdoor living.

The most economical of course is just a plain concrete slab. The drawbacks are they will crack over time and tend to look cold and industrial. An inexpensive way to solve for the aesthetics and keep the price low is to stain the concrete and warm it up with color.

The next step up is a stamped concrete patio, this is more expensive, looks great, but will not prevent cracking of the concrete. From there you can get into a variety of pavers from a straight brick look to multi-dimensional pavers. These are quite popular today. Then you get up to your Travertine stone patio’s and various tiles, they can be used as pavers or a tile

Today’s trends are centered around 4 areas: shade, fire, cooking, and water.  Home entertaining is more and more popular as people don’t want to drink and drive, they avoid the expense of restaurants, vacations, or just love the idea of escaping in their own backyard.

Shade structures are an important part of outdoor living. Screen porches are largely popular in Charlotte as they provide refuge from the sun and insects. Other solutions include covered patio’s, pergola’s, and retractable awnings.

Whether it’s a stone outdoor fireplace or stone fire pit, the fire features are still growing in popularity. It is not just the idea of providing heat, it is a visual focal point and great gathering area for friends and family.

Outdoor kitchens are growing every year in popularity. People are no longer satisfied with just a grill. Most common additions include a refrigerator, a sink, a smoker, and side burner.

Water features can be a hot tub, spa, pond, or water fall to create soothing noise. Water features are mostly about ambiance and beauty.
