Have you been told you can’t build a roof line for a screen porch you really want?

When you are having a screen porch built, there is a big difference in talking to someone who can build a screen porch and those that design and build screen porches every day! We have had countless prospects call us at Archadeck of Charlotte to look at the potential of a screen porch for the back of their house. When we recommend a gable roof for example, we hear “the last guy said we could not have a gable roof”.

Designing and building screen porch roofs does take a lot of experience and vision. The back of the house has several potential obstacles that include but are not limited to chimneys, windows, different roof lines that may jet into the space, dryer vents, air returns, roof vents, etc…

Roof designs are critical because they can affect the amount of light that comes back into your home. They also are critical to insure the porch looks architecturally correct and appear as if it were built with the home, not as an afterthought.

Please make sure you go to our photo gallery under “screen porches” at http://www.charlotte.archadeck.com, to see what the possibilities are when it comes to screen porch roof design or simply call Archadeck at 704-999-1330.

New code for North Carolina for outdoor fireplaces!

EZE Breeze Screen Porch with Outdoor Fireplace integrated and sky lights

Archadeck of Charlotte has designed and built hundreds of outdoor fireplaces in and around the greater Charlotte area. Up until this year, we built them with all of the same materials. Now, there is a code stating that when you build a gas outdoor fireplace, you must use a stainless steel frame that is being enforced. This is especially important when building the outdoor fireplace in a screen porch! It is a more expensive way to construct them but all of the surrounding counties seem to be adopting the code! Where should I put my grill on my patio or deck?

A common question we get at Archadeck of Charlotte is where should I place my grill on my patio or deck?

The answer we provide is based on asking a few more questions. Is this going to be simply a grill without an outdoor kitchen attached to it? How often do you grill? Is your grill aesthetically pleasing to where it should be highly visible or more subdued? What is your exterior cladding, vinyl, stucco, wood, or brick? Do you mind being out in the rain periodically?

Once these answers are provided, we can assimilate a strategy as to where to best place the grill. We always want to consider the proximity to your indoor kitchen unless you have a complete outdoor kitchen where it will not be necessary to walking back and forth throughout the process. In addition, are there level changes in your deck or patio that will make placement a different consideration? Do you have an area that will provide shelter from the rain? We usually can figure out the placement within 5 minutes. To get some great ideas, go to http://www.charlotte.archadeck.com

How do I choose the correct paint or stain color for my screen porch or covered patio?

How would I go about choosing the appropriate paint and/or stain color for my screen porch? We have 25 years experience at Archadeck of Charlotte designing and building screen porches and covered patios.

The first thing we look at is the existing trim color of the home. Is this a color you are going to stay with? If so, it makes sense to paint the porch columns the same color and the house trim to make it appear as if the porch came with the house and was not an after thought!

Secondly, what look are you going for in your outdoor living space? Do you prefer a more rustic porch? Are you looking to have a soothing or uplifting ceiling? Dark stains are quite in vogue today and give a deep and rich feeling to the room.

Finally, think about maintenance considerations. Generally speaking, stain is going to be lower maintenance than paint and does not show dirt as readily! To get great color ideas for your screen porch, go to http://www.charlotte.archadeck.com

How can I determine the column size for my screen porch?

One of the important but mainly overlooked details when designing and building a screen porch or covered patio is the column size. So, how can you determine the appropriate size?

A good rule of thumb should take into consideration not only the size of the roof structure but also the height. the higher the porch, the more substantial the columns should be. Material or substrate also plays a role in the size of the porch column. For example, if you are utilizing a round fiberglass column, they are accompanied by a base cap that will make the column appear even wider. When you are using wood, perhaps there is an intent to wrap it with trim?

Most deck builders and porch builders will use 4×4 columns as a standard and upgrade to 6×6’s upon request. Archadeck of Charlotte will use 8×8’s or even 12×12’s for large open porches or porches that are 12′ off the ground or more.
